The musical inspiration of the BERLIN ART QUARTET  is based on two records of the NEW YORK ART QUARTET which were published under the direction of saxophonist John Tchicai in 1964 / 65.

The then young student of architecture Reinhard Brueggemann, an avantgarde jazz drummer from 1965 to 1971 in the small circle around Jost Gebers, the later Free Music Production founder, was deeply impressed by the ART sounds from New York City.

The idea of founding a BERLIN ART QUARTET was born in 2013 by Reinhard Brueggemann (dr), using the specific instrumentation of the New York Art Quartet with the renowned band members Matthias Schubert (ts), Matthias Mueller (tb) and Matthias Bauer (db).

Trombonist Johannes Bauer had already taken Matthias Mueller’s place in 2013 and was a committed member of the band until his death in 2016. His very last concert was with us on October 19, 2015 in the jazz club “b-flat”. Also in his memory we continue our way in the free music of contemporary jazz and improvisation.

Die musikalische Inspiration des BERLIN ART QUARTET bezieht sich auf zwei Schallplatten des NEW YORK ART QUARTET, die unter der Leitung des Saxophonisten John Tchicai 1964 / 65 publiziert wurden.

Der damals noch junge Architekturstudent Reinhard Brüggemann, von 1965 bis 1971 avantgardistisch-engagierter Jazz-Trommler im kleinen Kreis der Free Jazz Fans in West-Berlin um Jost Gebers, dem späteren Gründer der Free Music Production( FMP), war von den ART-Klängen aus New York City zutiefst beeindruckt.

Die Idee, ein BERLIN ART QUARTET zu gründen, gelang Reinhard Brüggemann (dr) 2013, und zwar in der spezifischen Instrumentierung des New York Art Quartet  mit den renommierten Band-Mitgliedern  Matthias Schubert (ts), Matthias Müller (tb) und Matthias Bauer (db).

Schon 2013 war der Posaunist Johannes Bauer für Matthias Müller eingesprungen und bis zu seinem Tod  2016 engagierter Mitstreiter. Sein allerletztes Konzert hatte er mit uns am 19. Oktober 2015 im Jazz-Club „b-flat“. Auch im Gedenken an ihn setzen wir unseren Weg in der freien Musik des zeitgenössischen Jazz und der Improvisation fort.
